Every night in America, over 35,000 military veterans have no place to call home. They are sleeping on sidewalks, under highway bridges, or in the shadows of our cities – forgotten heroes, hidden in plain sight. 

As the holiday season approaches, this stark reality carries extra weight: while most families gather in warm houses, thousands of those who once wore the uniform will spend Christmas in the cold. 

It's a national crisis that demands urgent action, and in one Georgia community, a bold mission is underway to change the story for at least one veteran by Christmas.

In practical terms, the plan in McDonough is to develop the Post 516 property into a small community of 12 permanent tiny homes for veterans, complete with the support systems they need. This cluster of cottages – a Mighty Hero Homes Base – will include communal facilities and wraparound services (from a career training center to health services and even a community garden) to help residents truly thrive. 

It's designed as a neighborhood for veterans, where each person has an individual, affordable home, as well as a built-in support network of peers and on-site resources. If it sounds like an updated version of the old GI Bill neighborhoods, that's by design. The difference is these homes aren't a reward for returning from war – they're a remedy for years, even decades, of neglect that left veterans like Randy without a home. Mighty Hero Homes' broader mission is to replicate this Base model nationwide, focusing first on areas with high concentrations of unhoused vets.

Operation: Home for the Holidays is simply the kickoff – a proof of concept that if one community can rally to build one home for one veteran, then, brick by brick, we can scale that effort to 35,000 homes for 35,000 veterans. As the organization's founder puts it, "Unthinkably, tens of thousands of men and women who put their lives on the line for our country…are now homeless… Eradicating this stain on our country's history has not been a realistic expectation – until now."
